Deco Apartments

The deco apartments are located on the Oxford Street corridor in the Victorian seaside town of Weston-super-Mare. In recent years the area has been subject to a lack of investment however, with the arrival of the Dolphin Square development and the expansion of Weston College, regeneration has started.

The project involves the change of use of a former St John’s Ambulance training centre and business banking centre into 8 residential units and a ground floor commercial space. The existing Victorian terrace house will be remodelled to create 4 two-bedroomed apartments and a new three storey extension will be added to the rear of the site, providing four more apartments and a shared roof terrace. The single storey frontage will be replaced with a commercial space, with large glazing panels fronting Oxford Street.

Design storey’s approach was inspired by the impressive legacy of art deco architecture in the town and the rich history of the area. The single storey extension is intended to form a lightweight addition to the existing building and provides active frontage and views to the listed Emmanuel church. The rear addition is inspired by art deco factories with a saw-tooth roof, dark render and super graphics providing sharp contrast to the surrounding context of the jaded Victorian terrace.
