Design storey were commissioned by well-known Bristol-based developers, the PG Group, to provide architectural services to convert a Grade II Listed former library building into a gym.
The proposals involve a ‘light touch renovation’ of the existing listed building fabric and creation of additional floor space through the careful insertion of new, lightweight mezzanine structures. Spaces, that had previously been sub-divided as part of earlier renovations, will be opened up to increase the legibility of the original library building. Edwardian features, such as the original maple flooring hidden by later works, will be exposed as part of the renovation. The new interventions will be industrial in character, contrasting with the existing building, and articulating the new from the existing. The project is due to start on site early 2018.
